Vernalis' theory

Vernalis' development and theory came when she was studying editing and camerawork closely in music videos. She found that there are more edits in music videos and come much more frequently compared to film. They stand out as disjuncture and that the editing seems to have a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song. Edits such as jump cuts, wipes and special effects are used frequently whilst it's filmed in a base track, to give the video structure. The camera may also move in time with the music.

Here are a few examples of Vernalis' theory:

Earthquake by Labrinth, is a perfect example. It has uses of jump cuts, special effects and it's also edited to the beat. There's an edit practically every 3 seconds, which indicates Vernalis' theory on more edits happening in music videos, is in fact correct.

Another example is Take Care by Drake featuring Rihanna. The edits are not as hectic compared to Earthquake, there's use of special effects such as slow motion, but the edits come at a different pace, for example there's jump cuts every few 4 seconds, then it could go 6/7 seconds without any edits.
