House Style

We've chosen fonts that reflect an urban lifestyle. The font 'Urban Jungle' itself had tower blocks in the lettering which reflects where our artist is from and the London city atmosphere. 

For the artists name, we have chosen fonts that are in the style of graffiti as it again is very urban, and relates to our UK hip hop/grime genre. 

The top font will be used for our tracklist whereas the second will be used on the spine of the Digipak.

 

These are the fonts we have agreed on for our house style as well as the selected colours we have decided on using. We have also thought that it would be best as for the colours, we would choose a different tone from the colour palette. 

Analysis of Digipaks

As my originial artist was Wretch 32 and because he has no digipaks I chose to look at his mixtape instead. Which is the Wretchrospective, I could only find the two outward panels. They follow the conventions of a digipak.

What is a Digipak

A DigiPak is a modern, stylish alternative to the standard CD Jewel Case. Digipaks are a custom printed card packaging that can hold one or more CDs which are held in place with plastic trays (CD flexitrays) which are glued into the digipak. Digipacks are made out of card stock. The most common CD Digipaks is the 4 panel Digipak which opens like a book however 6 panel CD Dipipaks are also very popular, providing a larger canvas for CD artwork and text information about the CD. 8 panel and even 10 panel CD Digipaks are also available

Here are two examples of a 6 panel Digipak that was presented to me in class.

As my artist genre hasn't got any digipak when researching i looked at other genre just to have an idea of what a digipak must consist of . The outside panels should introduce the artist as the artist is new to the industry so the audience will know who it is. The front outward panel will have a photo of the artist possibly a close up with the name of the artist and the name of the album in a clear font. Also the text must not cover the artists face. The the back outward panel must have a tracklist with appropiate photos and the logo as well as the production company and any small print. The two inside panels will be much more simple compared to outside. The inside panel on the right will have the CD where as on the left may have credits or acknowledgements.

Good Ancillary Work

Good ancillary work consist of three main things

 

1. First of all is IT skills this is so that when producing the digipak it will be helpful as you can edit the photos and use different types of softwares. Also you must follow the conventions of the Dos and Don'ts
2. Following conventions - My ancillary work must follow the conventions of an new artist. So for example the front panel should be a photo of the artist so that the audience knows who the artist is.
3. Lastly is a clear visual linking -I need to consider that when making the digipak, it is for an album of the artist and not the single of our music video. However there can be small visual links with the album.

Dos and Don'ts for Digipak and Magazine Advertisement

These are the simple outlines for the digipak and advertisement, this is to help guide me when creating my ancillary product.

 

Do's: 

• Use Clear Font
• Use appropriate sizes for images and font.
• Use clear in focus pictures.
• Use appropriate sized photos.
• Use the layout that follows the convention of the rule of 3rd for composition.
• Use appropriate type face that's follows:
• Have a House Style
• Follow general conventions
• Follow convention of the 3 colour rule and use colour that is appropriate.
• Use appropriate industry logos and conventions, properly positioned:
• Date
• Company Logo
• Barcode
• Title/Artist name

Don'ts:

• Stretch images, this will make them out of focus.
• Use layer styles
• Use unnecessary effects. Any effects used MUST suit the genre.
• Place text across artists face.
• Use a font simply because 'you like it'.
• Fell you need a separate photo on every panel - be creative!!!
