Carol Vernallis's Theory

Carol Vernallis studied the editing and camerawork in music videos, and realised that edits the edits are much more frequent to those in film. it was also brought to her attention that may music videos stand out as disjuncture and the editing has a rhythmic basis with is closely relative to the song.

The main points of her observations are:

  • The rules of continuity editing are broken in order to draw attention to whats on the screen
  • Edits may be made obvious to draw attention to themselves, for example wipes or special effects
  • Jump Cuts are often used
  • Base Tracks are frequently used to give the video a structure
  • The camera often moves in time with the music
