Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Summary

  • Pop videos rely on repetition in a similar way the chorus repeats itself - according to Goodwin he thinks that this allows the listener to 'become more familiar with the songs genre'. Also he says that pop songs usually have a closure at the ending. For example it has to have a ending such as a fade etc, this is used to build a climax.
  • Another common feature in a music video is the way females are potrayed as disirable to the 'male gaze'. This is mostly seen in rap, hip hop and heavy metal genres.

Illustration: This is where the video is not always literal, it often tells the story of the lyric. In most cases dance is used to express the feelings & moods in the song.

Amplification: This is when the video adds new layers of meaning to the song that do not express with the lyric.

Disjuncture: Little connection between lyrics and video.
