Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin's theory on music videos has created a more 'technical' outlook on the video. As he categorizes them into 3 different groups; Illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

Illustration

Illustration is the telling of the story through the lyrics, an example of this is the song, 'how can I lose?' By Angel.

This video shows many examples of illustration. For example, the fact he's singing about directions and so on, whilst he's in a car and the camera keeps cutting to shots of the car driving by, turning, etc. There's also a bit where he sings about his beats(headphones) and at the same time, he puts his beats by his ears, which also shows illustration.

Amplification

Amplification is the introduction of new meanings to lyrics, that don't contradict those lyrics, but instead adds layers. An example of this is the song 'give me everything,' by Pitbull and Ne-Yo.

This video has some sort of relation to the lyrics, however not all of it has relation to the lyrics. For example, the scenery and theme is of to some relation to the lyrics. It's a high tempo, party type of song. However not all of it relates to it, but not in a sense where the video doesn't match to the lyrics, as for the most part it does. An example of relation to the lyrics is where Ne-Yo says, 'grab somebody sexy,' which is then soon followed by him grabbing the girl beside him.

Disjuncture

Disjuncture is when the lyrics has very little connection to the video. An example of this is the song 'deep in the valley,' by Rudimental.

This video clearly shows very little connection between the lyrics and video. For example, the running rabbits, has absolutely no relation to the lyrics. The word 'rabbit' isn't even mentioned throughout the whole song. The only minor relation between the lyrics and video is when Rudimental says, 'funky ravers,' and the rabbits are dancing along in the van. Apart from that, the disjuncture is shown very clearly.
