Analysis Of A Music Video: Rihanna - We Found Love

I think the Rihanna ft Calvin Harris - We Found Love video is a great example of a music video form as they use many conventions that are appealing in a music video.

To begin with, one of the main reasons for an artist to create a music video is to appeal to their target audience. As Rihanna is a young female who's music genre is generally pop/dance/R&B, her target audience is females from the age 12 to 27. As Rihanna is collaborating on this son with DJ Calvin Harris, this then broadens the target audience to males and females particularly interesting in dance music, from ages 16-25.

The subject of this video is about a couple (featuring Rihanna and an extremely handsome male model) finding 'love in a hopeless place.' This video shows their exciting, bold and sensual relationship as well as them having tonnes amount of fun.
This particularly attracts young females within the ages of 14-17 as this is generally the time they are most preoccupied with having fun, boys and relationships.
Featured also in this video is criminal, reckless behaviour and drugs which many young adults within the ages of 17-24 could find relations to, and would be particularly interested in seeing a female icon such as rihanna participate in this.
Females from the ages 19-27 may find particular interest in the love and vibrant relationship side of the video as this is likely to be what they desire around their age.

I think this is a great music video because they have the amplification narrative as they have exaggerated parts of the song lyrics.
This music video has countless exuberant base tracks as well as using slow motion when necessary, and a fast pace when the tempo speeds up. In time with the tempo before each chorus, various jump cuts appear displaying clips from the base tracks.
The cut away shots are what also make this video great as they don't have obvious references to the video, however fits perfectly with the video and song because for example; the cut away of the lightning strickening could represent a strike for the worst in their relationship.
This music video also displays the use of a green screen when Rihanna is in a bedroom presumably with fairy lights above her.

Overall I think this is a great music video as it has many conventions of all music videos such as  the use of a green screen, fast pace, slow motion, cut away shots, jump cuts and an amazing performance. Also I feel that this video successfully appeals to her target audience as well as the artists target audience that's collaborated with the song
