Music industry 2012

I conducted some research on the current state of the music industry. I found out that there are 3 major record label companies; Sony music(SME), Universal music group and Warner music group.

Sony
Sony also owns electronics such as laptop's, hardware such as the PS3 and an input in the film industry, making films such as Spider-Man. They have plenty of well known artists currently have under their name, such as Britney Spears, Justin Timerlake and all the rights to Michael Jackson's music.

Universal music group
Owned by Vivendi, who also own film production and TV broadcasting. The universal music group also has a few subsidiary companies in Universal music publishing group and BMG. They have artists such as Cheryl Cole, Drake and Kanye West signed onto their label.

Warner music group
Owned by Warner bros, who are also known for producing films, TV animation and DC comics. They also have a few subsidiary companies such as Warner/Chappell music and Time Warner. They have artists such as Bruno Mars, B.o.B and Wiz Khalifa signed to their label.

Overall, what I learned was that the current state of music is unpredictable. Obviously you have your regular top of the chart artists such as Rihanna or Drake, but it's becoming very open. I have noticed many unknown artist coming in high in the music charts whenever I browse through it, and often they produce very good music, which do very well and get very good recognition. Also, music videos are becoming more and more popular and important to the music companies. It seems to be what represents the actual song and seemingly important to have a good video in order to achieve success with the song. Of course that's not always the case, but music videos are being put out there to catch the audience's eye and give them a good viewing experience, as if it were a TV program.
