Changes Made To Digipack

During my research i have discovered that my original digipack was not ideal, so as i added to my research i managed to get some audience feedback and as I did so i was given some really good feedback which really had a massive impact on me. Therefore i have come to a conclusion to change the whole front of my digipack and it now has a picture of the same location and has the same colour scheme following through both my panels. Now i believe my digipack is actually following the codes and conventions which i was made to follow and its looking really good so far.

Thought Behind Digipak Name

Instead of thinking of a random name to put as the title of Dee Bank's first digipak, we thought it would be nice, to think of a name that had a meaning to it - that reflects the artists life, upbringing or an inspirational title. A few names we had initially thought of were:
generator
We had then agreed on the name I had thought of which is Deeperspective as it has three meanings in one. The first meaning is 'Dee' as our artist is Dee Banks. The second is the word 'Deeper' which can reflect the songs on Dee Banks' album; his lyrics have deep meanings etc. And finally is the word 'Perspective' which again gives the audience an insight to what the songs on the album are like; lyrics may reflect Dee Bank's life through his perspective.

House Style

We've chosen fonts that reflect an urban lifestyle. The font 'Urban Jungle' itself had tower blocks in the lettering which reflects where our artist is from and the London city atmosphere.
For the artists name, we have chosen fonts that are in the style of graffiti as it again is very urban, and relates to our UK hip hop/grime genre.

The top font will be used for our tracklist whereas the second will be used on the spine of the Digipak.

These are the fonts we have agreed on for our house style as well as the selected colours we have decided on using. We have also thought that it would be best as for the colours, we would choose a different tone from the colour palette.

Analysis of Digipaks

As my originial artist was Wretch 32 and because he has no digipaks I chose to look at his mixtape instead. Which is the Wretchrospective, I could only find the two outward panels. They follow the conventions of a digipak.

I then chose to look at Calvin Harris - Ready for the Weekend

What is a Digipak

A DigiPak is a modern, stylish alternative to the standard CD Jewel Case. Digipaks are a custom printed card packaging that can hold one or more CDs which are held in place with plastic trays (CD flexitrays) which are glued into the digipak. Digipacks are made out of card stock. The most common CD Digipaks is the 4 panel Digipak which opens like a book however 6 panel CD Dipipaks are also very popular, providing a larger canvas for CD artwork and text information about the CD. 8 panel and even 10 panel CD Digipaks are also available

Here are two examples of a 6 panel Digipak that was presented to me in class.

As my artist genre hasn't got any digipak when researching i looked at other genre just to have an idea of what a digipak must consist of . The outside panels should introduce the artist as the artist is new to the industry so the audience will know who it is. The front outward panel will have a photo of the artist possibly a close up with the name of the artist and the name of the album in a clear font. Also the text must not cover the artists face. The the back outward panel must have a tracklist with appropiate photos and the logo as well as the production company and any small print. The two inside panels will be much more simple compared to outside. The inside panel on the right will have the CD where as on the left may have credits or acknowledgements.

Good Ancillary Work

Good ancillary work consist of three main things

  1. First of all is IT skills this is so that when producing the digipak it will be helpful as you can edit the photos and use different types of softwares. Also you must follow the conventions of the Dos and Don'ts
  2. Following conventions - My ancillary work must follow the conventions of an new artist. So for example the front panel should be a photo of the artist so that the audience knows who the artist is.
  3. Lastly is a clear visual linking -I need to consider that when making the digipak, it is for an album of the artist and not the single of our music video. However there can be small visual links with the album.

Magazine advertisements

These are a few magazine advertisements that I found influential and that had a relation to our genre.

The first advert I found influential was one by Plan B.
The advertisement shows a quite basic promotion of the artist. Basic, but effective. As it shows off the necessities such as the promotion of the album, the artists name above in big capital letters and even some reviews from critics. It also shows off the fact that it's 'the multi-platinum album of the year,' and that instantly arouses it's audience as now they have essentially been hyped up by this poster. Just the reviews and the inclusion of the album's status is enough to interest the audience.

The second example is again Wretch 32. Most of our ideas have come from Wretch, and as it's the very same genre, we can take many inspirations from his work. The theme is one thing that could be taken as an inspiration. It shows a urban genre which is of course also our genre. The font and even the name of the album can be looked upon when it comes to making our own digipak. As this was his debut album, Wretch couldn't get away with promoting himself without a picture or not showing his face, etc. He's used the same picture that's on the cover of the album, which is not always used. Some advertisements show off another of the artists picture to promote their image more. However, this also works as it helps implant the image and make it more recognisable to the audience. It also includes some of the other artists that Wretch has worked with and that will make an appearance in his album. This furthermore increases the interest of the audience, as it could include an artist they like or a specific genre that an artist is from. And the important basics such as the release date and the little picture of the album cover, which is of course very important to help the audience recognise it later on.

The final advertisement I looked at was Rihanna's. This wouldn't act as a complete inspiration, as Rihanna opts for the more 'unique' way of promoting her work. Which is something we cannot implement with our artist as he is new, up and coming and relatively unknown. As Rihanna is now a global superstar and known everywhere around the world, her style of promotion is based on little unique signs such as the 'R.' This does give me an idea of perhaps including a sign perhaps for our artist, which would set a new trend along with that artist. This helps connect the artist to the audience, as they will be almost inspired by this trend and it would also help identify the artist. For example, Michael Jackson and the crystal glove was a trend setter and he is one of the very first things you'd think about, when you see a glove like that. The font also gives me a few ideas on perhaps how I'd like to style it out and match it with the artist.

Do's and Don'ts of Design Work

This is what I should do/include when I'm constructing my digipak covers and magazine adverts:

Tracklist

Analysis of Advertisements

This poster relates to the target audience as its colour of purples, red and white are bright and eye catching which will definately attract the target audience. Its release date is written in red so its noticeable and stands out to the rest of the poster. It showcases different ways you can purchase the album, so Tinie Tempah's target audience (ages 15-25yrs) can purchase it digitally as well as a hard copy. Featuring tracks on the poster can catch the eye of Tinie Tempah's wider target audience as they may recognise his singles and want to purchase the album.

This poster relates to the target audience as its eye popping blues, blacks and whites will engage the attention of them, as well as the long shot view of the artist Wretch 32. The target audience will also recognise the tower blocks and the graffiti like dripping effects of the motif which will attract them to the advert as its something they will be familiar with. Featuring the digipak itself allows the target audience to familiarise themselves with what it looks like, so they know what they'd be purchasing. Showcasing where they can purchase the digipak allows the target audience to easily find where to buy it instead of searching for it. As shown, purchasing of the digipak could also be done digitally.

Font ideas for our digipack

These are some of the ideas we thought of adding in our digipack because we think goes good with the genre of our music video etc..
